Created in 2001 and recognized as a public interest foundation from 2011, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) aims, in a spirit of sharing and cooperation, to yearly highlight and reward high-quality creations in order to nurture the advancement of the watchmaking art and contribute to promoting the watch industry worldwide. The annual competition is opened to all brands.
The winners are selected by an independent international jury consisting of senior experts. Designed to celebrate the 12th Art, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, more often known as the GPHG, salutes the excellence of contemporary watchmaking creations. It enables an international audience to follow the evolution of this art through a competition culminating in a prize-giving ceremony, which this year will be held on October 29th at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. Ahead of the ceremony, the year’s best timepieces are showcased around the world. Intended as an annual salute to the excellence and creativity of worldwide horological production, The GPHG is often compared to the Oscars of the watchmaking world, and is recognized as the highest honor in this field. In 2015, the GPHG will award 17 prizes. The 72 timepieces that are showcased at the exhibition are the watches pre-selected by the jury during their first round of voting and represent the best watchmaking skills and this year’s latest trends in design and technology.
These timepieces will be continuing the competition to win the prestigious “Aiguille d’Or” Grand Prix or another of the 16 other prizes that will reward the finest creations of the year and the most remarkable actors on the watchmaking stage. In order to pay tribute to the diversity of the various watchmaking creations, the GPHG 2015 edition enables watch brands to compete in 12 categories, and notably in five new, designed for chronographs, tourbillons, perpetual calendar and chiming models as well as mechanical exceptions. There are also categories devoted to mechanical watchmaking for ladies’ high-mech watches, for jewellery watches, artistic crafts as well as for models retailing for less than CHF 8000 (Petite Aiguille”).
The GPHG exhibition is a unique opportunity for the international public to admire the of the most beautiful watches of the year, brought together for this once off occasion. Watch enthusiasts are invited to vote for the Public Prize by selecting their favourite model from among the 72 pre-selected watches competing in the GPHG. Voters automatically take part in the draw to win a watch gifted this year by DeWitt. To vote, just consult the page showing the pre-selected watches on the official GPHG website : www.gphg.org. The name of the winner will be drawn at random and announced on-stage at the GPHG awards ceremony, to be held in Geneva on October 29th 2015.

전 세계에서 유일하고 독립적인 시계 경연이라 할 수 있는 제네바 시계 그랑프리는 2001년 스위스 제네바 주의 후원을 받은 공공 이익 재단에서 시작했다. 오랜 기간 전해 내려온 시계 제조 기술의 전통과 혁신, 그 가치를 세계에 널리 알리고 동시에 여러 시계 제조사들이 보유한 우수성에 경의를 표하는 일을 목표로 한다. 모든 시계 브랜드와 그 해 발표된 시계들을 대상으로 하는 이 연례 경연 대회는 15년이 지난 지금 시계 업계의 오스카상이라 불리며 가장 영예로운 상으로 인정받고 있다. 후보작에 오른 것만으로도 해당 시계의 가치를 증명하는 척도가 되며 상을 거머쥔 시계는 GPHG 수상작임을 드러내는 표식과 함께 각 매장에 전시된다. GPHG의 트로피는 제네바 출신으로 스위스 여권, 은행 수표 등을 디자인한 그래픽 디자이너 로저 푼드가 고안한 것으로 숙련된 기술과 장인정신, 이를 후세에 전승하려는 의미를 담고 있다.
각 브랜드는 6월까지 참여할 시계를 제출했고 전세계 시계 전문가와 컬렉터로 구성한 심사위원들의 심사를 거쳐 7월 1차 선정 시계 발표, 9월 1일 12개 부문 각 6개, 총 72개의 수상후보작들을 선정했다. 이 시계들 가운데 최고상인 애귀으 도르를 비롯해 8,000스위스프랑(한화 1천만 원선) 이하에 판매되는 시계에 수여하는 프티트 애귀으, 여성, 주얼리, 예술, 그리고 새롭게 더한 뚜르비용, 크로노그래프, 캘린더까지 각 부문별 최고의 시계를 뽑는다. GPHG 공식 홈페이지에서는 수상후보작 시계 가운데 가장 마음에 드는 시계를 선택할 수 있는 대중상 투표를 별도로 하고 있으며 투표 참여자들에게는 드윗 시계를 경품으로 받을 수 있는 기회가 주어진다.
제네바 시계 그랑프리 재단은 10주년을 맞은 2011년부터 매년 시상식 전 홍콩·파리·런던·뉴델리·마카오·싱가포르 등 세계 주요 도시에서 수상후보작의 전시를 개최해왔다. 2015년 전시는 10월 29일 제네바 대극장에서 본 시상식이 진행되기 전 홍콩·두바이·제네바·런던 그리고 서울에서 처음으로 열린다. 한국에서 최초로 열리는 비영리 시계전시가 될 서울 전시는 그간 디자인 · 여행 · 음악과 관련된 라이브러리를 건립하고, 전 세계 유수 박물관 입장, 젊은 건축가 프로그램 등 문화 전반에 걸쳐 다채로운 후원을 해오고 있는 현대카드에서 주 후원사로 나섰다. 경합에 참여한 72개 수상후보작에는 한국에 아직 소개되지 않은 브랜드나 미출시 시계들이 포함되어 있어 시계 애호가들에게 더욱 뜻 깊은 자리가 될 것이다. 실용적인 스마트워치의 출시로 시계업계가 다시 출렁이고 있지만 장인 정신과 전통을 잇겠다는 사명감으로 긴 시간 공들여 만든 시계들은 그 자체로 깊은 감동을 선사할 것이다.
